Actually, I'd recommend v.1.xx of Claris Em@iler. 1x is free, while you might be able to source 2.0 somewhere. I still use 2.0 in Classic, as I've _still_ not found a superior mail client (and I've learnt all the kb commands). Eudora 5 doesn't do it for me.
Emailer 1.0 has a lot of features, can check multiple accounts, and I think is still the only one that can send mail via AOL mail accounts (correct me if I'm wrong). It also supports Base64, UUEncode and AppleDouble encoding, as well as .hqx. You never get ridiculous spam showing up in the email body, as it's text only (no HTML). Mail categorization is esp. useful; hit a key combo and prioritize mail by number and color. A lot of freeware plugins and AppleScripts are out there too. I ran it on my Quadra 700 as well (25MHz 040) and it runs on any 68K Mac from the LC (020) and up. While not relevant to your PowerBook 500, it also generates far smaller databases than Entourage, which is bloatware with a lot of features. Just not space efficient. FWIW, I've never had a corrupted Emailer DB either, and there's also a tool for archiving older mails into a FileMaker DB.
