The way I understand it, all Fast Ethernet (100 megabit) PC cards require a 32bit PC card slot for them to work correctly. The 1400 (and 5300) only have 16bit slots.
You are out of luck. The 2400, 3400, G3 and later all have 32bit CardBus capable PCMCIA controllers. Sorry!
