Only thing I know about a battery issue is that some pre-production 
units caught fire.  Apple changed the battery from LiOn (a new 
technology at the time) to NiMH.

Apple was trying to promote a small CD-ROM drive that would fit in 
the expansion bay but no interest was shown so they dropped the idea. 
The 5300 expansion bay is too small for a conventional CD-ROM drive. 
Later models use a similar but larger expansion bay with a little 
panel that flips out of the way for the CD-ROM drive.  AFAIK the 
floppy drive is the same for both machines though.
