Hi, I have a 3400c (240MHz, 144MB RAM) and I use messenger with OS 9.1 and it works pretty good. Maybe there's some kind of conflict with OS8.6, but I haven't used that system in a long time, so I couldn't be sure.
I'd recommend installing OS 9.1 and giving it a try, it's worked great for me. Hope that helps.
