I am relatively new to all of this termination stuff; but I DO know that the 
5xx series of powerbooks are not terminated internally. I would buy one of 
those closed-end terminators and plug it (w/ the hdi-30) in the back of the 
540c to close it off; in the short term. 

For the long haul, I would get an internal terminator for the IBM drive. 
Maybe it is not terminated and the Apple 340mb HD was?
