Does the 6500 have a PCI or CommSlot modem. A PCI card should have
several lights (3 or 4). One will be a 100 light, another a Full
duplex light and one is likely a link light. If the 100 and Full
duplex lights are on then you are operating at full speed. Some PC
Card NICs have lights and some don't. For both you could check Apple
System Profiler. It has fields for Speed and other info although on
mine most are "n/a".

The best way to hook them together is with a 10/100 switch. You can
usually see on the switch what speed each port is operating at.
