All the projectors I've seen use standard VGA pc-style video input. They act like a really fancy monitor... ;-) You can definitely use them with a Mac if you can find a way to generate a VGA signal...
So you'll definitely need the video-out card for your 1400s. You'll also need a Mac-to-VGA video adapter. Does the 1400 vid card have a standard Mac monitor port or does it have the funky high density port that requires the PowerBook Video Adapter? If it doesn't have the standard DB-15 monitor port, you'll have to get the adapter too... You can find it all on eBay.
