The best/safest way that I know of is probably to use LCD Screen Cleaner. There are several online retailers that sell the stuff, but off hand I don't know what it's called or who sells it... Big help, I know. Sorry. ;-) I bet if you Google it though, you'll get about 100 hits.
OTOH, I've used dammp dish towels, moist paper towels, and lint-free cloths (the type used to clean records - you know, vinyl albums...). Of course, none of these are recommeneded - even the softest rag has fibers that _can_ scratch your display or rub off the protect coatings on it's surface. Never use household cleaners (ammonia based or otherwise - stuff like 409 or Windex in the US) as those can seriously damage the display (that being said, I have used small amounts of Windex mixed w/ water on a damp cloth to clean off finger smudges after classmates touched my screen back in the day - I never had any problems, but YMMV). The LCD screen cleaner can be expensive, and depending on the vintage or state of your display, it may not be worth your while. Like I said, a damp cloth (not dripping, just damp) works fine for me.
