The thing that will most help your batteries overall
is to use them.  With the battery out of the machine,
it discharges at a slower rate than when it was in the
machine, but it still discharges.  Leaving a battery
on a shelf with no use will kill it just as sure as
leaving it in the machine with no use... it'll just
take a little longer ;-) 

I leave my batteries in my machines all the time.  I
don't think I ever take them out.  I always try to
completely discharge and completely recharge my
batteries at least once every couple of weeks.  By
totally discharging, I mean letting the computer run
from battery power until it shuts itself off.

Currently I still have a P166 PC based laptop that I
bought brand new in 1997.  It still has the original
battery it came with.  It still gives me consistent 2
hour running times from a full charge.
