-- <http://www.mp3machine.com/mac/GENERAL_PLAYERS/> and <http://www.mp3-mac.com/> seem to be good resources for MP3s on Mac.
My personal recommendations are the following... Player: MacAMP (from @soft, NOT MacAmp!) MacAMP was renamed MacAST a while back, but the beta (aka MacAMP) works well and runs like a champ on my 6100. Plus, it's free. Unlike MacAST. Let me know if you want it and can't find it online. MP3 encoder: MPecker (from @soft, bought by Proteron and renamed to MPegger). MPecker is free, if you can find a copy. Proteron charges for MPegger. Mixer, DJ software: MacAmp DJ (from @soft - last version I can find is beta, but absolutely stable and free.) I don't think @soft has continued development on this, but it's a perfectly useable mixer. I haven't been able to find DL locations for any of the software above, but I have copies. Notably, MacAMP is freely distributable, so if you want a copy, I can send it to you. Ripper, recorder: Coaster (freeware from Christian Roth) <http://www.visualclick.de/coaster.html> Excellent software with built-in amplification (gain control), allows recording from any analog source (line-in, microphone, etc), eliminates all "pops" in analog source before recording them to the sound file, automatically determines breaks between tracks by listening for dead space from the source, and records to CD-ready AIFF. Expect about ~10MB/minute using CD quality settings (44.1kHz, 16-bit stereo). Other notes: MpegDec will probably run well on your machine. It's not as fully featured as more mature MP3 players, but it plays MP3s decently on my 5300, so that's saying something. <http://members.aol.com/xanathus/mpegdec/> Oh, and it's free... And it plays MP3s on 68k Macs, for everyone else reading this - I'd recommend a 190 or 5x0, but it's supposed to work all the way back to '020s. (Mpg123 claims the distinction of playing MP3s on 68k as well, but everyone seems to think MpegDec is better.) Encoding in real-time on a 1400/133 will not be possible. Even a true PowerMac G3 300 has trouble encoding in real-time, especially with a moderate load on the processor other than the encoder. My Wallstreet 233 regularly drops down to .7x - .8x. Ripping will happen just as fast as your CD drive can feed the data over the bus. 2x - 8x or so, I should guess. I used to use QuickTime Player to rip tracks by manually importing each track and re-exporting it as an AIFF... that was a pain in the ( )( ) before I found proper rippers like TrackThief. But it worked, and it was free. MP3 players are largely a matter of personal preference. I LOVE Audion (even more than iTunes). Play around with different players until you find the one you like - there are plenty to choose from. The same is true of encoders, though they are harder to find (especially the free kind, since many use a licensed proprietary encoder). I liked N2MP3 until it introduced a drag & drop bug with CarbonLib 1.4+ installed. 8.6 is probably as "crash proof" an OS as you will find for that machine... You can eliminate further problems by staying away from 3rd party software and extensions... A note of caution - MacAMP 1.0b7 has a bug that causes an unexpected quit when it plays to the end of a playlist on 8.6, but that doesn't harm the machine or cause any other faults. Hope this helps.
