OK, OK this "friend" gives me an old Mac 520 portable. I worked fine, until I tried to install 8.1. I used Disk Editor, but I formatted the hard drive to ZERO.
Now it only starts with OLD Norton utility disks, or the 7.6.1. Install CD. The OLD disk doctor "sees" it, but won't fix it. Tech Tool is useless, since it only works with COLOR Macs.
