For starters, why don't you download the 3400 Users Manual from Apple's site? It doesn't give the kind of detailed troubleshooting and take-apart information that the Service Manual offers, but *does* at least explain how to put in a RAM card (it's easy) -- and especially since you're new to Macs you should find a lot of other useful pointers in there too.
