Perhaps completely unrelated, and I know several people here probably
run 9.1 just fine on these, however:

This got me thinking about every time I've put 9.1 on any NuBus
PowerMac, which of course the 1400 is based on (the NuBus part, I
mean.) I've yet to get the Startup Disk cp to work, although I can't
recall what the specific error # was.

And I'm talking about yanking everything from the Control Panels and
Extensions folder (not just "turning off" everything via the Extensions
Manager) except of course Text Encoding converter, which needs to
remain.

Or, maybe I'm thinking of an incompatibility with Sonnet's G3
extension. Nevermind. My bad. The coffee's kicking in now.

If you can't get it to work, there's always Apple's System Picker. It's
not a cp, it's an app, and safe and effective with everything from
9.2.2 back to the dawn of time. It reports your 9.1 startup disk as
"System 1.1" (8.6 and older show correctly).

One cool feature: Instead of normally launching it, clicking on the
System Folder in the popup and restarting, you can just drag any System
Folder on top of it and the Mac will then reboot from it.

Don't recall where I got it, but it can be very handy to have. Look on
the Developer pages, since it was geared towards developers who needed
to debug multiple System folders way back when Macs couldn't safely
have more than one System Folder on the Startup Disk.
