See my previous message for info on my experiences with PB1400 CD and
CDRW drives, but writing that reminded me of my quest for a replacement
CD and/or CDRW mechanism for PBs 3400.

I've got several PB 3400 CD modules (12x and 20x) and they all share the
same mechanism form-factor. It appears to be a 17mm thick Sony mechanism
(says Sony on the PCB and laser unit anyhow) inside a custom(?) shell.
The 12x and 20x drives use a ribbon cable to connect the interface board
(at the rear of the module) with the drive's internal PCB.

How can I figure out which Sony(?) mechanism(s) to try? I've searched all
over the Sony websites and have found nothing useful. I bet there are
non-public sites for OEMs (such as Apple) for specs, etc., but I found
nothing linking to them from the public areas.

I've stumbled around eBay to see what Sony laptop drives are out there,
but found only 'standard' 12.5mm laptop optical drives, and they don't
look too promising for this application.

Any ideas, suggestions, help, encouraging words, etc. greatly appreciated,

Dan K
