I've no clue what's wrong with your friends system, but I've NEVER had a problem with my $12 Sandisk flash pcmcia adapter on either a 5300 or a 540C, nor have lots and lots of other folks including professional photographers. Highly recommended. Also, if the card is usable on the Mac, it would be usable in the camera...she may have to re-format the card in the camera. Smartmedia tends to be flakier in general than flash...I personally wouln't buy a camera that used it, especially that 'secure media' drm crap they're foisting on consumers.
