I removed the older Apple CDROM 5.3.1 extension and regained some functionality vis a vis "reading" audio CDs as far as Toast was concerned with either drive. Of course now my non-Apple CDROM won't work without a third party driver, so I tried SpeedTools 4.02. I hadn't tried using only the current Apple extensions because the whole point of the exercise was to be able to use a CDROM and the burner, not just the burner. It's 2X2X4. Thought I had it licked but for a sometimes "Mac OS error, -17" from Toast when reading from the CDROM. Next try got it "work," went to do the burn and didn't get past the beginning of writing track 1 before Toast coughed up a Type 10 bomb. Lovely. As I write this I'm using the burner to rip a CD onto a temporary Toast partition. We're up to track 4 after about 10-15 minutes. Next week when that process is finished I'll try and burn it. That'll only take a half hour... But I'm still back to wanting a CDROM for ripping and/or straight copying. Based on an informal import test using iTunes my speedy CDROM only imports at about 2 or 3X anyway, so for this old computer I might as well use a slower CDROM. I'll try an Apple unit later and see if that's OK. -David -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
