Since yesterday my 5300 has developed a truly alarming bad habit: if put to sleep with the battery in, it refuses to wake up. It *runs* OK on the battery (AC not connected) though only for something less than an hour; it boots on the battery, or on AC with the battery in or out, but with the battery in it refuses to sleep when the lid's shut, and when sent off from the keyboard or menu cannot be awakened. The blinking green light comes on normally, but when any key is touched it simply goes out and the whole computer -- display, hard drive, everything -- stays black and to all intents and purposes dead. It responds to no key combination, nor to the reset button, but if unplugged and battery removed briefly, then replaced, it boots up normally.
Zapping the PRAM and resetting the power manager seemed to fix things: the PB slept and awoke normally once, but after being left for a couple of hours (sleeping, on AC, battery in) the problem recurred, BTW I've just replaced the RAM card: it seems entirely normal, but could it be causing these catastrophes anyway? Or is it the PRAM battery: date and time have been fine all along. Or is the main battery itself the culprit: I was just about to send it off to be rebuilt, but hesitate to make the investment if the computer is on the verge of terminal collapse for other reasons. Any words of wisdom will be vastly welcome. Best, Victoria -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
