I just want to share this with the list. I have had the typical recurring
problem with the loose AC adaptor jack on my Powerbook 5300. Im the
original owner, bought the item in July 1996, and have had it back to Apple
under the 7 year repair extension program in the USA at least 3-4 times, no
problem.

When I called Apple again on Jan. 2, 2003, they said I would have to pay
about $350, as it was no longer covered, as the repair extension program had
expired. They also implied that they had repaired it several times before,
and I was out of line to expect they would continue to repair the problem
for free for the life of the computer. So I thought OK, cant do it, too
much money.

So I searched the Net for info on how to repair the item to see if I could
get someone to do it for me locally. I discovered this list, looked back
through the archive and got appropriate tips and information about the
repair extension program and this particular problem. I finally understood
the terms and what went on better than I ever did before. Someone on this
list had mentioned Article # 30427 on the Apple site for specific terms. I
searched for it, and eventually located Article #30425 which is the most
recent document modified 8/28/2002.

In Article #30425 it specifically states that The PowerBook Repair
Extension Program will concluded (sic) on 2003-09-30. I called them today,
referenced their own article, and after 20 minutes on the phone, they are
issuing me a fully paid, Airborne Express pick up at my door repair and
return for free under the terms of the original agreement and information in
Article #30425. The customer service rep I spoke to said we didnt know it
had been extended. (Note: in repair documents I have from Apple they also
refer to the Repair Extension Program as REA).

So I urge anyone who has been turned away in the USA from having their 5300
(or other computer that was covered by the same extension) repaired by Apple
under the RE program not to give up. Be patient, polite and persistent. Find
something to do while youre waiting on the phone as it may take up to a
half hour. Be sure to mention Article # 30425 and copy it so you have it in
front of you to refer to. Of course, it has to be one of the original
problems associated with the repair extension program, not something else.

I love the size and convenience of my Powerbook 5300. I use it only for word
processing and its fine for my needs. I will not be able to get back on this
list for awhile to answer any further questions but I hope this is helpful.
Good luck and thank you to all on this list for sharing information and
expertise these past few years. It really helped me out.

for that much I can almost

Since the problem recurs about once every 1 or 2 years, I assumed
