And I did! (learn something -- not easy). In fact it seems likely enough to be useful in a couple of weeks (to do some temporary connecting with a friend's laptop without going to the trouble of configuring a network) that I'm going to make sure the appropriate extensions are installed. FWIW this clever idea might have been more widely used if weren't strictly a laptop-to-laptop device; if, for example, an IR port were installed on the *front* of desktop Macs, how handy.
