There are two different cards that I know of. One is made by Apple the other by Focus I think. The Apple card was 8 bit and the other was 16 bit which had problems with stacked ram. Maybe you have the aftermarket card and not the Apple one. You don't need the video card if you're not going to use an external monitor.
