I'm almost certain my 3400 is as described above. The Apple 3400
Ethernet/modem extension is disabled, all the rest of the stock Apple
stuff is there* and there aren't any other third party Ethernet items to
speak of. 

*If the Apple Built-in Ethernet or the newer Enet extension is present
on a regular install of 9.1 on a 3400 then that's a suspect, as I
wouldn't have thought to disable that. I was under the impression the
Ethernet/Combo extension was a mere driver for the port, not also the
whole Ethernet software for the 3400, as it now sounds it is.

I'll double-check this weekend.
