Thanks for responding! It helped me whittle down the problems!

        Okay, it seems I got stuck with original AppleShare 3.8.6 and 
AppleShare 8.5 and File Share 8.5 which don't seem to gel with my 8.1 
set-up. (ironically file sharing under clean-install 7.6.1 is 
perfect!). According to TekServe I also have to remember NOT to use 
the Chooser in selecting the Server machine. So I'll check out 
retrieving those three files' 8.1 or 8.0 versions from the Apple 
KnowledgeBase page. Again thanks for the assist! Truly helpful dudes!!
