Let the computer sit and "charge" over night and then with the 
computer on, unplug the power supply.

For a 1400 the only cheap ones you are likely to find are used.

I got lucky and when a company was going out of business they had new 
Apple G3 LIon batteries for $15.  They work great.  But finding such 
a deal is real hit or miss.
