Quite possible.

First off, what about the built in infra red ports? 
To network?  No.  Forget about that - it won't work.

The crossover will work, although it mightbe a little
problematic.  If the 3400 doesn't sense something
connected at the other end of the cable on boot, then
it won't work.  I'd say, make sure you have Appleshare
turned on at both units.  Then boot up and you should
be able to see any shared drives you setup when you
try to view them.  If you can't, try first shutting
down and restarting one mahine and then the other to
overcome the drawbackof the crossover cable.  There'd
be less headaches witha cheap hub, but it'll work. 
You won't have a problem going between OS X on the
Pismo and 9.1 on the 3400...  I set my Dad up the same
way butwith OS 8.5 on a Wallstreet vs OS V 10.1 on a
new iMac...
