AppleShare PDS is most likely invisible to keep people from deleting it. It has to be on any shared R/W disk and needs to be at the root level. Trashing U&G prefs wouldn't work, that is what is usually tried first by people and it doesn't fix a bad AppleShare PDS. The AppleShare PDS has to be on every disk, the U&G pref is in each System Folder. The AppleShare PDS file not only keeps track of owner/group/guest privileges it keeps track of which folders are shared. Many times the entire HD is shared but you can share one or more folders located anywhere on the disk. The only constraint is that you can't share a folder inside another folder that is shared.
