That means that you don't have drivers installed that will "drive" 
that card.  It won't work until you install the appropriate drivers.

If you can't find drivers at the usual places (manufacturer's 
website, for instance), I'd wager that you are out of luck.

I don't think 3com ever actually made Mac-specific cards (could be 
wrong, though).  The 589 series was cloned by Farallon for the Mac 
OS.  Consequently, other 589 clones can be driven by a patched/hacked 
Farallon driver.  That approach won't work for your card (unless 
Farallon cloned this card too and someone can hack it).
