Greetings to all networking experts: Yesterday I reformatted the HD on my PB 5300c. This seemed like a good idea at the time for reasons explained in a thread of six weeks or so ago, "Re: partitioning HD for VM." The 5300 has internal CD/ROM, of course, and I don't have an external one either, but normally it can access the CD drive on my desktop Mac through a PCMCIA ethernet connection.
So: I booted with a disk tools floppy containing a minimal OS 8.5 and Drive Setup Lite, and reformatted with no problem; then copied the system from the floppy onto one of the new HD partitions and added networking extensions so as to install the full OS 8.5 from the CD in the other computer. But nothing works: the (Global Village) PC card software bombs out at startup (so does File Sharing extension); AppleTalk and TCP/IP say they can't work without Open Transport (which I had extracted from the CD with TomeViewer and installed); the File Sharing CP says it needs something called AppearanceLib which I can't find anywhere; selecting AppleShare in the Chooser brings up another demand for Open Transport. Is there a networking extension that I haven't thought of, or is this puny version of the OS unable to support networking at all? (At startup it claims to be designed for floppy boot only and demands a full system installation, but then does run the computer, after a fashion.) There must be some way to install an OS in this computer. I'm willing to give up on ethernet and use LocalTalk over the printer cable, but neither computer sees the other at all. Apple's Network Access Disk Image contains system 7.5, which won't boot a 5300. System 7.5.6 is available for download, but apparently those images (all 19 of them!) won't install from floppies. What can I do to get my PB back??? TIA, Victoria -- Don't blame me, I voted with the majority. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
