If you get a good external case, they work great. Booting from some
models of powerbook via external CD-ROM can be problematic for (to
me) no logical reason, but HDs have always worked fine for me.

See www.macsales.com for pretty decent prices; they have 50 pin SCSI,
and larger 60-to-50 pin converted SCSI drives that they'll put in a
case and format for you. I have bought a couple big external 60-to50
pin SCSI drives, external, from them and the 50 pin adapter and the
case were of good quality, and 60 to 50 pin convertors have always
worked great for me (I've always got them from this place though).

I've put new, big drives in cheap cases bought from "recycle" stores,
too, but for something you want to trust it's worth it to get a new
case/powersupply as drive cases that are old, can go bad too and then
you are wondering it it's the drive or the PS in the case. Not just
ceasing to function, but weirdness as the power fluctuates if the PS
isn't totally dead.

Other World (the macsales.com place) has great mac support and I've
used them a bit; you can use them just as a price guide if you want,
they're also pretty competitive. You certainly shouldn't pay much
more than their prices, and it might be some work to find something
that costs less from a reputable online place. You'll usually get a
version of CharisMac with their drives, as well, even if you can
format it with the Apple drive setup.

You will of course need the powerbook SCSI adapter, those were at
Data Memory Systems for $8 each for ages, in the clearance.
