Have you tried looking around VersionTracker or Google at all? In my limited searching, I found some interesting stuff. You might be interested in "Practica Musica 4.0" <http://www.ars-nova.com/practica.html> They claim it will run on the 68040 under 7.6(.1) or 8.0/8.1. I don't know if they really mean the "68040" though, and not just '040 class CPUs (like the 68LC040 in the 520). It looks like it will allow you to transcribe music and play back the resulting score as a midi. And in combination with serial midi-devices, quicktime 4, and/or FreeMIDI, it can record & transcribe music played on an external midi-device. It also costs a cool $125 for the "standard edition." FreeMIDI is, well, free. it can be found at <http://www.motu.com/english/software/freemidi/body.html> You should also definitely check out Motu's other software (like Mosaic): <http://www.motu.com/english/other/MOTUProducts.html> In my music theory class that I took back in high school, we had some midi keyboards hooked up to LC580s that we could play. The Mac would record and transcribe the midi. It was pretty cool. So, I know this is possible, but I don't remember what software we used. There are a handful of free music notation programs out there that will run on the 68k, but in my short look-see in Google, none of them seemed too elegant. I think finding a free tool for the 68k might be hard to do these days. And finding a professional quality tool will probably be even harder.
