That explains things. The Mac version allows test/demonstration printing
without any addional parts. Hold the "Ready" button while pressing the "Power"
button. When the "Ready Light" flashes, insert paper and a test page is
printed.  PC printers (for the most part) need their own built in fonts, extras
of which would be available on a card. The Mac versions use the Mac's built in
fonts and can print with any font available to the computer. The joys of Mac vs
PC even carries over to peripherals.
