IIRC, the mechanism is the same one as used in the PowerBook 500-series. You
might find a whole 540C for less than that, then scavenge the drive and port
out the PowerBook on eBay. Free floppy drive! :-P

No. SCSI might be an option, if you get a floptical or SuperDisk drive, but
those are rather expensive options for essentially obsolete technology.

Nope. USB PC Cards (for the Mac) are all CardBus (32-bit) cards, and the
1400's PCMCIA slots don't support CardBus.
