It's not that bad, we're not Windows here :) You can (and I do on several machines) have 8.6 and 9.1 system folders. Switching from one OS to the other is just a matter of blessing the right system folder, or, if you have multiple HDs, using the startup drive control panel. Moving from some OSs you might have the desktop rebuild itself, and there's a couple issues (HFS vs HFS+, etc to be careful with) but you can have many system folders, with different versions to choose from, if you are careful. I suggest making a backup of your current 8.6, then installing (not clean install) of 9.0. That will keep your custom extensions present in 9.0. Find/resolve any conflicts, and you can always go back to the untouched, working 8.6 copy if there's a problem, or if you can't resolve a problem, then do a clean install of 9.0 and move (copy, not move) your custom extensions from 8.6 to 9.0 and find the one that breaks.
