I use my Farrallon Ethermac card in the top slot only in my 1400c. Sometimes when ejecting other cards (ie. CF reader or modem) the Farrallon card pops out or if my cat runs by and catches the cable it will pull straight out without "popping" the catch.
Sometimes I have to insert it when the modem card is in the bottom slot for it to seat properly. Otherwise it works great....
