[My guess is . . . ] His external charger, an aftermarket item sold under a variety of names, uses a 1A 12V AC adapter with a much smaller plug than used by a 1XX 'Book. Roughly the size of a PB190/5300 plug in fact. Maybe I missed other's mention, but surely the first thing to do is reset the power manager. Plug in the AC adapter, remove the main battery and then press and hold the reset button on the back for as long as needed. Usually under 10 seconds, but sometimes that's not long enough.
