I'm pretty sure I own a member of all of the 68040 powerbook families... Heres my opinion on them all...
Duo 280 pros: Small Light Nice Active Matrix Sleek looking Almost all came with a modem Duo 280 cons: Bad keyboard No ports other than serial and modem Rather fragile Worst sound out of the three File transfers are a big hassle (with no floppy or scsi) PB 500 pros: Best sound out of the three Nice selection of ports PB 500 cons: No PC card Floppy drive not swappable. Battery issues galore Bulky PB 190 pros: Biggest screen of the three Swappable drive bay PC Card Slots (big plus) Feels a bit faster than other 68040 machines (maybe because it was last 68k?) Looks modern and professional PB 190 cons: No built in ethernet or video out No built in modem AC adapter is finicky The 190cs is my the one i use the most, and its actually my main machine now a days (even opposed to my iBook 366), as it has the pc card slots and bigger display. I enjoy having a 68k powerbook with 802.11b wireless ethernet - it is rather thrilling and gets a lot of "cool" and "woah" type responses. And although it does have a passive matrix display, it is not really noticeable unless your looking at it from way in left field. Not like that passive matrix display on the 520. That thing is aweful even if your sitting right in front of it. The Duo though is great too. Although it lacks like a million features, its just so small I couldn't help but fall in love with it. The 520 I never really used much, Its more of an apple I have just for the sake of being able to say I have one. Sortof like my Centris 610 and Apple IIgs. I know a lot of people swear by the 500 series but I'm just not one of them. Even though my 520 is slower and monochrome, even if it were a 540c I would still prefer the 190cs. Although the stereo speakers are cool I admit. I wish my iBook had those. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
