Well, that didn't seem to make any difference, but I also turned off virtual memory (I have 144 megs) and that made the difference! It still stalls a little, bet never longer than about 30 seconds.
Before the change I was watching the clock this morning: 11:43, 11:46, 11:48, 11:51, 11:53..... Really annoying. I think the real solution is going to be an up grade to a PowerBook G4 someday, but it is working pretty well now at least. Thanks for the help guys.
