Someone mentioned appleshare in this set up issue, and although I don't know a thing about how to hook up dsl, it hasn't been that long since I used 8.1 I read the newgroups constantly and remember there being a key issue with appleshare, which I didn't use at the time, but it was mentioned so often that it might be worth checking out.
