The printer port is slow, about 230kpbs max. Basic 10Base-T ethernet
(the most common kind) is 10Mbps max ( =10,000kbps ). You are using
Appletalk over serial ports(aka LocalTalk). Trying to run TCP/IP over
serial ports is a royal pain, and all it does is put TCP/IP in
Appletalk packets: it would be slower b/c of the translation. Using any
protocol (Appletalk,TCP/IP,whatever) over ethernet is guaranteed to be
faster. Appletalk over ethernet (aka EtherTalk) is easy to set up. Like
the other post said, cheapest way is to get a crossover cable. Better
way would be to get a hub. They are really cheap and leave you room for
expansion, (i.e. a network printer, another computer, etc.). The
differences in speed between protocols is basically unimportant on a
two-computer network that isn't heavily used. Besides, nothing will
compare to the difference between LocalTalk and EtherTalk.

It's 2 AM now, so there may be some inaccuracies. Bottom line: ethernet
always faster than serial.
