Curiously, the 1400's hard drive is about twice as "tall" as the iBook's, so I'm actually taking up less room. Thanks for the help, everyone, and I'll try and make a boot floppy to install 8.1 onto the iBook drive over Appletalk (talkin' bout slow!). Fwiw, 8.1 runs fairly well even with the "Road Apple" 117 MHz 603e. Can't wait to upgrade the processor, but the 117 is just fast enough that I'll be able to wait it out on eBay until I find something useful.
