First of all, this should be posted to the g-books list so I will keep this short:
If you are going to be doing the "upgrade the hell out of everything" approach to OS rather than buying a tibook, you will need a Pismo as many others will say. They are very expandable there is quite a market for processor upgrades and such. I myself, am running an original (non-upgraded) 300mhz wallstreet with 384mb of memory. Seeing as this was the king and brute of laptops when it came out in Oct. 1998, it still has some aspects that are still acceptable for X. It came with an 8gb hard drive which was insane when it came out, I did not upgrade this. I bumped it up to 384 and soon 512mb of memory and that was about it. I am running X.2.4 and use window shading haxie and have dock magnification and bouncing when opening icons turned off to help aid the old video system. I have poured about $180 into it, including a wifi card, usb card, firewire card, a superdisk drive, and a 256mb memory card. This cost me $500 in late August '02, and was a very good deal at the time seeing as the battery still to this day holds a 2.75 hour charge, even in X. Everything else I bought ON SALE...the superdisk drive I bought during VST's 50% off sale a while back and cost me $20 something. This came with a regular CD player and no DVD PCMCIA card as the seller must have kept these. I run X daily and this is fine, however I save my B+W at home for all really demanding things such as photoshop and such... Overall if you keep the wallstreet, get a 300mhz processor card, or better yet, get a 300mhz wallstreet which are usually VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF as mine was and still is as they were top of line by far, for macs and whatever Wintel monstrosity there was at the time. Otherwise get a pismo, and sell everything (all the accessories) separately as they would cover more $ of the pismo that way since most people sell them as a whole and there is a somewhat of a lack of separate accessories available for the WS.
Good luck either way and, try g-books next time...
