PBs 5300/190 will run fine from a Li-ion battery but as you mention will
not charge inside. Runtime on a 5300 with a Li-ion battery can be simply
amazing. I tested a 3400 battery in a 5300cs and IIRC got over 6 hours
(with _no_HD_ spindown and _no_ backlight dimming!!) before the battery
was spent.

Well, not entirely true they _won't_ charge in a 5300 . . . according to
PB lister Victoria (I forget which of the two Vickys however :-) it _is_
possible to charge a Li-ion battery in a 5300 using the first OS version
that shipped with the early 5300s. Haven't done it myself however.

What I'd love to know - what part of the OS checks for battery type, and
how does it do it? An interesting hack would enable Li-ion battery
charging in later OSes. IIRC, the burning-5300 phenom associated with
pre-production 5300s was caused by a defective batch of early Li-ion
batteries, scaring Apple from using Li-ion at all in the 5300/190 series.
I imagine by the time the 3400 had hit the streets, Li-ion battery
technology and production had been better perfected.
