Problem solved. Here was the problem: "After not using a 3400 for awhile I powered it up this weekend for software retrieval. To my surprise the screen has begun to roll and won't stop. The laptop worked perfect when last used. I've left it on for up to an hour hoping a thorough warm up will help but it doesn't. I've swapped a working screen onto the laptop and that made no difference. I've also checked all cables and connections. I searched archives but it appears nobody has brought up this problem before. I've never seen it happen on any PB and am uncertain what to check next. Has anyone encountered this problem? Two words I hope not to read are "logic board. " :-) Chuck"
This past weekend I connected an external monitor and the 3400 worked fine through it. That made me happy but the laptop screen continued to roll out of control. I performed a clean install of OS 8.6 which didn't resolve the problem. I began to think the problem must be at the logic board and decided to scan the entire board, pin by pin, with a magnifying glass hoping to find the problem source. The first place I scanned was the ribbon connector. Inside it and between the 4th and 5th rear pins was a teeny spec of tin touching both pins. I touched it with a toothpick and it fell to the bottom of the connector. I blew the tin piece out, connected the ribbon cable and the screen works fine now. The spec of tin is not similar to the ribbon or logic board connector and I have no idea how it got where it was. This was a most unusual repair. Thanks to all who offered suggestions and support.
