Hi Folks,

Using a 160 Meg non-Apple Rom HDD, I am able to run OS
8.1. The trick seems to be that the original 7.6. Disk
Tools floppy recognizes this drive and not the
original 1.3 Gig (Apple Rom). Neither is the latter
recognized by an 8.1 PPC Disk Tools floppy with a
fresh install of either 8.1 or 8.5. I conclude that
the original 1.3 Gig (running extremely hot and
causing other components to run very hot also) is
dying or dead.

In order to avoid boot problems with the 160 Meg, I
keep the Pb in sleep mode. Booting from a cold start
is very tricky, and may require 5 reboots.
I use the 7.6 floppy to delete Finder prefs and/or
select Start Up disk to speed up a cold boot.
8.1 allows iCab 2.9.2 (and maybe 2.9.5) and that is
why I am (still) using this machine.
Best
George
