USB on PB G3 (1st generation/Kanga)

I had read on this listserve that a Belkin USB busport cardbus would work in 
one of the pcmcia slots of a PB 3400 or PB 3500 (Kanga) without having MCE 
modify the laptop.  Is OS 9.0 or higher needed for this to work?  I placed 
USB Adapter Card support 1.4.1 in the Extensions folder of the system folder 
but I am running OS 8.5.1.  I know that I'm suppose to boot up before 
sliding the cardbus in the slot.
