Recently, this hasn't worked. When I do it, or save directly to floppy, I
get the error notice "the file could not be written because a disk error
occurred" or if it appears to copy correctly, when I open it in word on the
2 PC's I have, I get computer garbage text. I've used brand new floppies and
checked the disks on 2 different computers but nothing works.

Then it's probably not the disks. It sounds like your floppy drive is either dirty or failing.

Try cleaning the drive and seeing if the problem continues. You may need to disassemble it to clean it thoroughly, but a store-bought disk drive cleaning kit might also work.

5300s are old now. It wouldn't surprise me if the drive were going south, especially if you "exercise" it frequently. Fortunately, the drive can be replaced pretty cheaply through eBay or the swap list.

Peace,
Drew
