There is NO discharge utility (or any other kind of reconditioning utility) for 
lithium ion batteries (which is what the 3400 uses). When they're dead, they're dead,
period. Attempts at rejuvenation invite disaster. There are utlities to recondition 
NiCd and NiMH cells, but NOT for a lithium ion (at least, not safely).

If you only put the 3400 to sleep (instead of fully shutting down), the charger may 
never engage. One simple thing to try is to pull out the battery for a few seconds
(with the pb booted up and running) until the "x" appears in the battery icon, and 
then push it back in again. If the lightning bolt icon then appears and stays on,
you're in good shape; let it finish recharging before putting the pb to sleep. If the 
bolt icon appears only for a short time, then goes away well before fully charging
the battery, then it's almost certain that your battery is kaput.
