Shreve Systems was selling these modems in full "retail" packs around last
Christmas time (about the time of their so-called "liquidation" sale) for $5,
and those came with the fully updated (i.e., PowerMac ready) version of the
software.

Without the required software, the 500's GV modem is dead as a Dodo Bird.

A physical examination of one of those $5 blow-out modems (factory sealed)
reveals that these are/were Global Village PowerPort Mercury "for the PowerBook
500 Series" modems.

The software/firmware included was ...

1) GlobalFAX 2.5.5, and

2) GlobalFAX OCR 1.0.1

... so these modems are/were both 19.2 kb/sec enabled, and PowerPC enabled,
straight out of the box.

The firmware included with the PowerBook 500 itself was an older version, one
which would seldom, if ever, achieve even 14.4 kb/sec, and was not PowerPC
compatible.

The actual modem hardware was identical, based upon my examination of several
"stock" PB500s and the Global Village PowerPort Mercury "for the PowerBook
500 Series" modem.
