The subject line says it all. I'm using 7.1 on a PB160.
I'd like to check my mail via imap rather than pop3 with 'leave on

Using the built-in 14,4 modem means imap's ability to download only the
headers of messages I'm not interested in is a big win.
The older versions of Eudora don't seem to do it - I'm not sure where
else to look....

Try MaiDrop <http://www3.baylor.edu/~Carl_Bell/Mail_Drop/>

I love this program: it's light and fast, one of the best e-mail clients ever.

The only 'downside' is it is absolutely pure text; anything else comes through as an attachment. (which isn't downloaded until you ask! <grumpy old man/>which, dammit, is the way email *should* be!</gom>)

But it will run very happily on your PB160.
