If you can ping IPs outside, but name lookups fail, your domain name (DNS) entries are 
incorrect.

At some point Macs did not do a good job of getting the DNSinfo automagically via PPP, 
in my experience (although Windows machines would).  Make sure you are specifying the 
DNS server (by IP, not by name ;) ) in the ppp config, or in the DHCP config if you 
are using ethernet.
