Get 8.6 or at least make sure to download the update. Also, if you ever get a G3 upgrade for the machine, be aware that you will have to get 9.1, 8.6 has problems running the upgrades. Finally, with a g3 upgrade and sys 9.1, you will need to download from apple a new startup disk control panel called 9.2 start up disk control panel. It is not extractable from os 9.2 disks, but confusedly called 9.2 anyhow and is stand alone.

I've running two accelerated 1400s with 8.6 with no problems, but recently (two weeks ago), I upgraded one to 9.1.
I've noticed no change or improvement, only that the Startup Disk Control Panel was not working, it exited with an error message.
I copied the Startup Disk CP from 8.6, and it works like a charm.
Of course, YMMV.
Best regards.
